(& just in case you’re wondering no dogs were harmed during the epiphany)
So, about a year ago me and my partner adopted our third dog, a big beautiful Neopolitan mastiff called Adrien.
Within 24 hours we’d changed his name to Chaos; one because every time I thought of the name Adrien I could hear Sly Stallone in the back of my head shouting Adrien (in his Rocky voice), and two because that is exactly what he caused in the house…
Here’s the thing.
I get self-fulfilling prophecy, so in all honesty, & hindsight, I really should have picked another name.
About 5 months ago things started to get a little uncomfortable in our house. With 3 male dogs all trying to be ‘the boss’, none of whom had a stable enough upbringing to show the other ones how to behave. This led to some pretty hairy incidents & we both agreed that we needed someone else to help us sort things out.
But before we had this epiphany, we, like most people out there, had a really good go at fixing things ourselves first.
My partner enrolled in a dog psychology diploma (& he received a distinction so super proud of him).
You’d be surprised just how much human and dog psychology crosses over. There were some things which instantly made sense to me as they were similar techniques I use when helping parents manage problem behaviours in their children.
There were also things which went way over my head and left me feeling more confused than ever.
Co-incidentally, this is how we broke him.
We embraced five different ‘theories’ and haphazardly applied different techniques without allowing them the opportunity to work.
We became the inconsistent parents (& in human psychology, this is the worst type of parent).
It’s also the worst type of business owner.
I like to call it magpie syndrome.
You log onto social media and all of a sudden there’s the next big thing everyone’s raving about & you just have to try it.
So you consume 30 hours of free webinars, download 300 free PDFs (which you still haven’t even looked at) then decide you need to splash out a few thousand on an e-course which is going to give you all the step-by-step details...
All of which leaves you more confused, running out of cash (fast), clashing with your partner over the smallest things imaginable and terrified that your whole life is about to implode before your very eyes.
In case you’re wondering, this is where I was between August 2016 and September 2017 …
& if you’ve not been there, let me tell you, it is 100% not a fun place to be!
So how did breaking my dog help me turn everything around?
Basically, things became so unbelievably difficult with the dogs, that I realised I needed someone else to help me fix it.
I needed someone else to take the responsibility away from me.
I needed someone else to take over and just give me a step-by-step plan of what I needed to do for my EXACT situation so that I could change my focus and just blindly follow along.
More importantly, I could have faith that this professional (a clinical dog psychologist no less) knew what she was doing & ultimately, everything will turn out OK.
What I really needed was someone to mentor me in my business.
Someone to get me focused on what I love doing, what I’m great at doing and what I actually want to be doing.
But, I also knew, there was no point getting someone in to help steer my business in the right direction if my head was all over the place.
So, I took charge of my life and each week I picked one thing to change.
One thing to bring myself back into mental and physical alignment so that I'd be more receptive and open to changes - whatever they be.
I started with the easiest, diet.
I quit drinking (again).
I moved onto exercise, then sleep, then gratitude…
I literally went through all the techniques I help my clients with.
After a few months I was ‘back in the game’ and ready to have someone guide me and mentor me in my business.
For the last 3 months, I’ve been getting help & it has been the best decision I have ever made.
There is only so much we can do by ourselves.
