Hey, it’s Katie here and I’m back with another business building mistake most female entrepreneurs make; using the wrong content when advertising on Facebook.

For years and years I was literally throwing money away on Facebook advertising.
I’d create a full campaign, turn the ads on, spend hundreds and see very little return.
Ever the determined entrepreneur I kept on trying...
Over the course of the past 5 years working online I have taken 3 different Facebook ads training programmes, spent thousands on ads and spent hundreds of hours trapped inside the Facebook ads manger trying to work out why when I’m doing all the things I’ve been told is it not working.
I knew that if I could just figure out this whole Facebook ads thing it would open a world of endless possibilities, opportunities and generate sales.
I always had products and services that sold when I was able to have a conversation with someone.
I would go to networking meetings, in person events and appear as a guest speaker and always filled out my diary.
Yet again, not mastering this supposedly easy thing led me to feel utterly useless, completely incompetent and wholeheartedly dejected.
After the third course and yet another failed attempt at advertising my services I felt completely backed into a corner.
I no longer had the money to utilise print media, I didn’t have the energy to traipse all over the country after having exhausted my local area and in true self-pitying style I was convinced that Facebook hated me…
Resigned to the fact that I’d have to build my business the old fashioned way, I entered a programme designed to help me perfect my presentation skills so that I could increase my conversion rate.
With the idea being, I could spend less time driving around the country because each event generated more sales.
During one of the training sessions I made an offhand comment about not knowing how I’d advertise the event’s I’d run seeing as Facebook hated me…
Then the co-host said something which set off a chain of dominoes in my mind about actually making Facebook work.
I knew it must do because other people use it successfully.
She said to me this one thing...
‘A Facebook advert isn’t your sales page. It should only be used to disrupt people enough that they go look at your sales page’.
So I went completely back to the drawing board…
The previous 4 weeks I’d been driving traffic to a full sales funnel with launch videos, webinars and resources and had seen some success at converting people who actually went through the funnel.
The problem was the insanely low conversions from my ads.
Because I knew my programme was worth fighting for I carried out a 7-day curiosity campaign.
My sole job was to excite my audience for 6 days.
Teasing them about what was coming up next, tantalising their entrepreneurial brain with all the possible futures if their business was working the way they wanted and digging the knife in talking about all of their pain points.
Then at the end of the 6 days, do just 1 sales video giving people just 24 hours to purchase.
The problem was that Facebook really does hate me…
OK so they don’t but it just so transpired that as I was running my 7 day quick launch, Facebook changed the goalposts about what words you could use, how you could script your ads and all the other things which destroyed even well-known and experienced entrepreneurs last year!
For me, I had my account stopped and all ads blocked 3 times in the 7 days…
In reality, I had an ad that went out on the Monday, then my account was blocked Tuesday.
I managed to overturn the decision and 24 hours later on Wednesday out went a second one.
Then come Thursday my account was blocked again…
Overturning this decision Facebook again allowed me to continue.
That was until Saturday morning when they said 'Oh no, you are not allowed to play on this platform'.
Saturday morning was 36 hours before cart close…
Sunday at 11:30 am my account was unblocked.
I stopped all the scheduled ads.
Jumped straight onto Facebook live and told my story.
I knew that even if Facebook blocked my ads account again, using Facebook live would already give me a good chance of getting in front of the right people.
I also knew that I needed to make sure I stayed on the livestream for over 15 minutes to get Facebook to push it out beyond my immediate audience.
That one video, generated enough interest in the 12 hours that sales started coming in.
It also sent enough people to the sales page that one person reached out to ask about the difference between paying in full and paying in part payments.
Even though this was in the sales copy, part of the FAQ and mentioned in the video she’d missed it.
Rather than being all defensive, I very politely took the time to explain and then jumped on Facebook live again and did a mini video about the difference between the two payment options.
Both videos were boosted and the total cost was just over £14.
So now, even though I’ve had a few interesting conversations with Facebook advertising agency owners...
I stand by my methodology:
Use Facebook live videos, drive curiosity and hit the boost button anytime your organic audience tells you that it’s worthwhile doing so.
