I’ve always prided myself on doing things well.
I was taught from a really young age that if you worked hard and put 100% effort into your work you’ll be successful.
Thankfully now, I know different but just bear with me and I’ll get to that...
When I first started my business I found out about a really great way to increase traffic to your website which doesn’t need much business acumen … blogging.
The problem was that I’ve never really been much of a writer.
While I think I am definitely improving, it wasn’t one of my latent abilities.
I’m much more of a ‘straight to the point’ and ‘cut to the chase’ kinda girl so I found blogging really hard.
The thing is that I knew in order to grow my business I’d need a captivated audience ... and to do that you build an email list ... and to do that you offer something for free ... and in order for you to get your free thing in front of the people who might eventually purchase from you somewhere down the line you blog!
More importantly, you blog about you …
At the time it was like my insides were waging this war. I was terrified in case I was ridiculed for putting my ideas, opinions and unique spin on things out into the real world.
But at the same time I didn’t have a huge financial investment to continually throw money away on ads so also had this gut wrenching, vomit inducing terror about the business failing.
Especially if there was something so simple I could do which would ensure that never happened…
While the ‘blogging’ fear was in full swing the clients started to dry up… & like every entrepreneur or small business owner going through a dry spell, this left me nothing but time.
Time to focus on all the things that were going wrong, time to focus on all the things I couldn’t do and time to truly focus on everything I was terrified to do…
Then as if by magic the universe got involved. I was at a local networking group and one of the other ladies who I’d been chatting to frequently asked how it was going.
As usual I smiled and said ‘Yeah every things fantastic. How about you?’
Then she said ‘It’s been crazy here the last few weeks. I started blogging three weeks ago and the clients are literally flowing in… It’s so easy to do as well’.
So, like any good entrepreneur I took the not-so-gentle nudge and decided that it would at least be worth giving it a try.
I mean after all I had the time!
I started researching blogging, how to do it, what to say, how often and more importantly where on earth do I do this blog?!
As I sat down to write the first one I felt pretty confident I mean after all I knew what I was talking about…
Then it came time to press post, to make it live and to unleash it on the world.
I couldn’t do it. It was as if my hands were no longer mine to control.
Every time I went to press the ‘publish’ button I ended up pressing save instead…
I must have re-read that first post a million times before publishing.
I kept thinking, what if no one likes it?
What if everyone thinks I’m an idiot?
What if I become a laughing stock?
... and the biggest one of all ... what if I’ve done it wrong?
You see, I had read other people’s blogs and I couldn’t write like them.
In fact, in all honesty, I don’t think I write like anyone…
I write as though you and I are having a good old natter over a cuppa.
But there’s always a useful nugget-o-wisdom or two embedded in there somewhere ;).
So what actually made me hit send?
What gave me the gumption to go ahead?
Well, I decided to fight fear with an even bigger fear.
You see, perfectionism is just a different word for procrastination.
Yes they may be packaged slightly differently but underneath it’s the same sneaky little anxiety based nonsense.
Being a psychologist I know the only way to fight fear is with a fear so strong you end up literally sprinting towards the thing you’ve spent weeks, months or years running away from.
So whenever you find yourself getting trapped in any anxiety based nonsense ask yourself what is more scary about not doing the thing I’m afraid of and that should give you enough of a metaphorical kick up the bum that you take action!
Thankfully, after a few posts, the blog really took off and I even had loads of people comment on how much they enjoyed reading the blog!
It even helped me land a few big clients, get a few speaking gigs and most importantly keep the business running without me hustling non-stop.
The funny thing is that since sharing this story with my members they’ve too been taking imperfect action.
One of them even came off a twitter chat they run saying ‘I did a Katie last night and sent everyone to a landing page before completing the PDF and the auto-responders…’
I can tell you we all had a chuckle, but here’s where it gets interesting...
One of the ladies trying to download her thing, happened to be an editor to a very well-known magazine for her industry.
Because the opt-in wasn’t created she reached out to let my client know and since then they’ve built a relationship and my client was featured as a spotlight business and ‘one to watch’.
She freely admits that there’s no way she’d of done that before we worked together.
Since that day of throwing caution to the wind and just rolling with it I’ve sent links out that don’t work, sales pages with spelling mistakes on and even launched before anything has been created.
While I’m not saying don’t take pride in your work and try your best, just remember that you’re human and your best, truly is your best!
Perfect doesn’t exist and if you hang around trying to make it happen your business will probably disappear …
For some of you watching this video that little bit of advice isn’t going to be enough to get you over the perfectionism hump.
