After the first three years I was in business I would get up at the crack of dawn and work way into the night.
I believed that this was the only way to succeed.
In the beginning there was so much to do to get set up, then when you start taking on clients you have to do the job you love, as well as all the business building bits that you hate ...
Any time I took off I'd see a dip in my finances.
Back then I was convinced that in order for me to succeed I had to keep up with all the long hours, no holidays and doing all the things that everybody else was doing.
I even started following all the Guru's saying get up at 5:00 a.m.
The problem was that on the inside I was becoming more and more exhausted.
I was getting maybe four hours sleep a night and still not achieving all the things I was supposed to achieve!
Slipping further into an emotional black hole of unworthiness, self-pity and anger at everybody else who was able to just take a few days off.
The problem was that the harder I worked; the worse things got!
You see, what most people don't tell you is that when you're putting yourself under
excessive amounts of stress day after day, your brain actually starts to shut down!
It's designed that way...
Then you start to struggle to make decisions, struggle to solve problems, struggle to
think straight and quite often end up spending 90% of your time not doing anything that is going to be worthwhile for your business.
Even though as a psychologist I knew this, I still got caught out!
It wasn't until one day when I woke up in the morning and I had to drag myself out of bed did I realise how bad things had become…
Because I knew feeling that low was more than just 'having a bad day', I decided then and there that I would take action to put my emotional health above any business building activities.
The only business activity that I needed to do on any given day was to serve my current clients and follow up with the leads that I already had.
I banned any 'lead attraction style activities' whether it was through social media, PR or networking in my local area.
My first job everyday was to do some light exercise to get the oxygen pumping around my body, then I'd journal to help clear my mind of worry and focus my attention on the day ahead, next I'd jump onto YouTube and watch some motivational and inspiring videos to get me in the zone.
Only when I felt good about my day would I then take any business building actions.
The problem for me is I'm a doer.
I like to take action ... and when I'm not taking action the guilt sets in...
I feel guilty for working 100 hours a day and similarly feel guilty for taking any time off!
Early on I'd find myself slipping back into old habits and skipping my exercise, putting off the journaling until later ... which obviously never transpired … and watching the motivational videos in the background, while doing something else.
I was so stuck in the myth of needing to work hard to be successful.
Thankfully the results I was seeing in my business started to tell a completely different story.
The day I'd commit to exercising, journaling and watching motivational video were the days I'd achieve everything I set out to do and very often when working less hours!
The days when I skipped my morning routine, I'd work longer hours and achieve less.
I also started to notice similarities between the day's money and clients would come in and the days when I actually did my morning routine.
After six weeks the pattern was clear.
The days when I was focused on my emotional needs first and my business needs second were my most productive and most profitable.
The days when I got bogged down in the work, were there days and didn't achieve very much and very often didn't even make any money!
While I have slipped occasionally, when I've had a big launch or there's been something going on at home.
I've kept up with my morning routine for the last few years and have continued to see success after success.
The truth is you don't have to get up at 5:00 a.m. in order to focus on your emotional health.
You just need to make sure it's the first thing you focus on in your working day.
Don't have it as an afterthought otherwise you'll end up slipping down the entrepreneurial emotional black hole.
