Back when I was first dipping my toes into the entrepreneurial lifestyle I had this huge misconception about how easy it was to run a business. Before setting out on my journey I’d had years and years of retail experience, most of them in a management role and for many years I was running highly profitable fast fashion stores. I genuinely thought this would be enough to run my own business. Boy was I wrong…
As it transpired, I was not comfortable selling my products or services. I always had this internal belief that anyone who sold was conning someone in some way. In fact, this belief was so internal I didn’t actually realise it was there until I was at least 3 years in and was really struggling to grow my business online…
Based on my own experience of buying I genuinely believed that if someone wanted something or needed something they’d simply go get the thing. I mean, after all, surely that’s what I’d been doing for all the years of my life…?
Little did I know, that actually isn’t the case!
I was so naïve about this whole business building malarkey I thought I could circumvent the actual selling part and still make it work. I knew I had a viable product and service, the local authority had been sending clients to me frequently and I was getting clients from the things I was doing online.
The problem was that neither of these were consistent.
The first 3 and a half years in business was a perpetual cycle of too many clients followed by not enough if any.
The amount of emotional pressure this placed on me and the financial pressure placed on my partner was insane...
I knew something had to change.
I knew that there must be something I was missing, that I didn’t quite get because other people were managing to have more success than me and for far less effort.
So I set out on my quest to learn everything I needed to know and for the first 6 months conveniently ignored learning how to sell…
Then randomly one day a post popped up in my Facebook feed from a guy called Jeremy Miner who was talking about ‘the new way of selling’.
A way to sell without needing to turn into a conman, a trickster or sleaze-ball.
You see back when I was at university, I’d had a go at some door-to-door sales for a charity and I sucked.
I was beyond useless often earning £30-£40 a week after hustling for over 60 hours …
The thing was many of the guys who were earning £60-£80 a day, were doing pretty dodgy things...
Sometimes guilt-tripping people into buying, sometimes intimidating people and sometimes flat-out-lying.
So all that was suck in my subconscious somewhere and was stopping me from learning this super important business building skill.
Thankfully, because of the ‘sales language Jeremy had used in his advert about it not being sleazy and heavily focused on it being ‘a new way of selling’ I decided to go ahead.
I paid the cash and spent the next 21 days learning how to sell without being a douchebag.
It was a really cool experience and every 3 days I’d have a coaching call with a mentor who’d help me refine the skills I’d learned and work out how to use it in my own business.
The problem was that every time I tried to actually use all the things I’d learned I would end up procrastinating and never picking up the phone, never sending the email and even chickening out of speaking about what I do and how I helped at any of the networking meetings I attended.
I even ended up having to call my big sister up to come to the house and sit next to me while I rang a couple of local businesses.
I had the sales script in front of me, approved by my coach and for 14 days’ I’d been through the pick up the phone and then panic just before I dialled the number!
Thankfully, with her sat next to me I managed to do it. A few calls later and I was feeling more comfortable.
Even this still didn’t solve the problem. I didn’t know what to do.
Then again, as if by magic, my Facebook feed came to the rescue and a post from Kendrick Shope appeared talking about Sales School.
Within the first week, she had helped me truly see that by me not selling I’m actually doing a disservice to the people I can help.
She even gets everyone to write out the words ‘selling is helping’ on a post-it note and stick it to the computer as a reminder.
As someone who likes to go a little over the top and who has a love of all things shiny, sparkly and crafty I went out and bought some fancy sparkly letters in pink and green and stuck these to the bottom of the PC.
The words ‘selling is helping’ has had pride of place since August 2017 and I still use it as a gentle reminder today if I’m feeling a little wobbly.
Understanding that selling is an act of kindness to those who are struggling from a problem that I can help them with has enabled me to rapidly grow my business.
Over the past couple of years helped over ten thousand people move through emotional difficulties they were experiencing and since launching the Female Entrepreneur Road Map to Health, Wealth and Happiness series in October 2018, hundreds of women have been able to course correct their lives and businesses faster than they imagined possible.
