I get it.

You're probably thinking that me calling mental illness a scam is a little bit of a low blow for a psychologist.

Chances are, you've been battling with your mental health for many years and are quite possibly outraged at the suggestion. 

I promise if you read the whole post, you too will understand.

You may very well end up feeling cheated by a system which says it wants to help, just like I did many years ago.

For those of you who don't know me, I want you to know that I have had my fair share of emotional trauma and have fallen to the bottom of the mental illness abyss.

In fact, things became so dark back in 2004 I tried to end everything.

Luckily, the universe had other plans for me.

I was given a second chance.

If you are feeling this way, know that this blog post can be your second chance, if you let it.

All you need to do is read on with an open mind...

When I was struggling to control my emotional and mental state, I didn't know I had depression and anxiety.

Back then, it wasn't spoken about like it is today.

I never believed I was broken, never believed I was ill and never had a label for how I was feeling.

I understood that I had experienced some terrible things and as a result was beaten down emotionally.

Knowing the power of our bodies, I always knew there must be a way back up.

I'm sure you do too if you truly think about it.

If we break our bones, they knit back together.

If we cut our skin, it regrows and heals.

If we traumatise our internal organs by overeating, we can reset them by returning to a healthy weight.

Our brain, arguably the most complex organ in our bodies must be able to fix itself.

The name Dr Michael Merzenich is probably one you've not heard, yet it is the most important name of all when it comes to healing from emotional trauma.

You see, back in 2007, Dr Michael Merzenich showed without a shadow of a doubt that if a fully formed adult brain has been damaged it can be re-forged with the right support, guidance and help.

Before this, despite the fact, there were many 'real-life' examples of people who had experienced traumatic brain injuries recovering...

The scientific community held steadfast to the idea that the brain's ability to heal stopped after puberty.

His research led to the terms; neuroplasticity which literally means our brain can reorganise itself as required.

It means it can compensate for damage caused by disease or injury by creating new neural pathways throughout our lifetime.

Then in 2013, a truly magical event occurred in Cumbria.

A young boy called Noah was born.

At birth, Noah was born completely paralysed from the waist down and with just 3% of his brain.

The reason for paralysis and the reduced brain mass was due to Spina Bifida.

Spina Bifida is a birth defect which causes there to be a gap in the spine which allows fluid to enter into the spinal column and the brain.

Due to the severe nature of his condition, he was given a terrible prognosis by the medical community.

Unperturbed, his family dedicated their waking hours to ensure he had as varied experience as possible.

Playing games with him, talking to him and sharing their love.

Over time, he started to defy the odds.

He started communicating, playing and interacting with the world.

Then age 3, his brain was once again scanned...

This time, his brain showed 85% mass.

In the 3 years since his birth, his brain had continued to grow.

Now aged 6, not only is Noah is talking, reading and writing like all other 6-year-old boys, but he is also able to lift one of his legs unaided and wiggle his big toe if he concentrates hard.

When I watched the documentary which aired, I had already overcome my own emotional trauma and supported others to do the same.

For me, this was proof that everything I had been saying was true.

It was also confirmation that the way in which the entire medical community is treating mental illness is wrong.

You do not need medication to help you return to a place of feeling good.

You need to fuel your body with foods which are packed full of tryptophan a protein which is converted into serotonin in the brain.

Serotonin is the mood-balancing hormone and the one which most medications try to hold onto.

Next time you feel a wave of emotional turbulence shake your mind head to the cupboard and make yourself an omelette, have some pineapple or grab a handful of Brazil nuts.

Also, it's important you understand the rewiring process doesn't happen over night.

It doesn't happen after a couple of conversations with a counsellor, a few sessions of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or a single hypnotherapy session.

Right now, you have been building solid and strong connections with the area of your brain associated with depression and anxiety.

If you think about your brain like a forest.

Those connections are great, big thick tree-trunks.

You not only need to chop them down, but also grow new strong and solid tree-shaped ones from the tiny little saplings of happiness buried deep underground before you can be free. 

It takes consistent effort on your part to do this.

No one else can do this process for you.

Doing the odd gratitude practice, saying a couple of affirmations every now and then or journaling once a fortnight will see you battling to regain control for years.

It might have taken you years on the way down, but it doesn't have to take years on the way back up.
