I’ve gotta start by saying, I truly love a good ole procrastination session.

Hiding away in my little craft room sewing, doing a jigsaw and even getting my glass etching tools out are a great way to get over the procrastination itch and back to some serious graft on the business.

Procrastination is important.

Sometimes, you’ve intellectualised a problem so much you need the time away doing other things so that your brain has the opportunity to gift you with the solution to your problem.

Other times, you’ve worked unbelievably hard, your brain just needs a break and you find yourself doing fun non-important things to re-boost your system.

The problem is, procrastinating too much leads to guilt, worry and stress.

Then you find yourself feeling utterly overwhelmed by everything you should have been doing you end up procrastinating even more…

Within a few days, you start to feel trapped.

Within a few weeks, you’ll start to feel the effects of burnout.

Burnout is not something to be ignored.

It’s the beginning of anxiety and/or depression.

The real problem, when these kick in, if there’s any chance you’ll make it back out of the black hole, you need real help fast.

Back in 2017, I was working so hard to try and make this whole business thing ‘work’ I skipped burnout and ended up drowning at the bottom of the depression and anxiety puddle.

You’d think being a psychologist, I’d have noticed that things were going wrong in the brain department…

Unfortunately, we are always the last to know!

Back then, was trapped in the cycle of helping others during the day and spending my nights consuming course after course trying to master the whole online business thing.

It seemed like all the money I was earning was simply going to pay other people to tell me how to make more money…

Every day was spent gripped by fear that the client I was working with would be my last unless I figured out how to be successful online

After working for yourself for so long, the idea of working for someone else truly does send shudders down your spine.

But if you don’t have a trust fund to keep you afloat at some point you have to walk away.

The crazy thing was, when I found myself in the depression and anxiety heap, unable to get out of bed, struggling to turn on the laptop and looking into how to close my company the business started to flow.

Clients started showing up, and not the nightmare ones, the ones you dream about working with.

I was asked to deliver keynote speeches on entrepreneurship and mental illness.

Other entrepreneurs asked me to support their members.

It was like money was falling out of the sky and coming from the weirdest of places…

For ages, I couldn’t figure out what had changed.

But here’s the thing; when we’re exhausted, stressed out and starting to loathe the very thing that should bring us true joy we fall into the fear trap.

We make decisions out of desperation, fear and worry, which, unfortunately, leads to more desperation, fear and worry…

Do this too long and we slip further down the emotional rabbit hole beyond stress, beyond burnout and way beyond emotional fatigue and into clinical levels of depression and/or anxiety.

The problem is that when we end up there, it’s really hard to even imagine a day which will work out well for us…

There comes a point where we decide that getting rid of the thing which is sucking us of our energy, enthusiasm and excitement for entrepreneurship is the only way to relinquish the pain.

For me, the idea of letting go of my business was the trigger my brain needed to lift the fog and enable me to take the actions necessary to make sure the success I was seeing wasn’t just fleeting.

Thankfully, this doesn’t have to be your trajectory.

Check out the simple steps below you can take to easily avoid the procrastination inducing burnout black hole (and subsequent emotional and mental health nastiness…):
STEP 1: Make a list of all your procrastination habits.

STEP 2: When you’re doing your monthly/weekly planning, make a note by the things you’ll likely find yourself avoiding.

STEP 3: Schedule in one job which you’ve been avoiding per day, at the start of the day.

STEP 4: Pick one of your procrastination habits and schedule it in as a reward for doing the thing you’ve been avoiding. Make sure your procrastination habit is not easily accessible from where you work otherwise this is going to be extremely hard!

STEP 5: At the end of every day, make sure you get everything set up and ready to do the first task as soon as you start the next day.

After following this process a while, two awesome things are going to happen...

The first awesome thing that happens is you’ll be able to tick off many of those things on your to-do list which is vital to your success but is currently giving you nightmares.

The second awesome thing that happens is you rewire the procrastination habit to become a reward habit.

Rather than finding yourself trapped in time-wasting activities, you’ll be flying through all your need-to-do’s so that you can get to the fun-to-do’s.

Once this happens, the real magic starts.

You’ll no longer be taking action from a place of fear, worry or desperation and instead of taking action from a place of excitement, enthusiasm and eagerness.

This means, the decisions you make, the actions you take and the results you see are aligned with a successful future, not with yet more failure.

It’s what happened to me back in 2017/2018 and what happens to my clients over and over again.

If I’m working with anyone 1-2-1 on their emotional health the first thing I do is ban any business-related stuff.

They literally have to shut their laptops and focus solely on doing things that make them feel awesome.

Thankfully, they trust me enough to do what I say and boy, are they glad that they do.

Like clockwork, as their emotional health improves, their business improves.

Even if they forgo network meetings, turn off social media and stop publishing blogs, they end up having clients magically find their way too them.

The simple act of releasing and letting go the need to find clients, make money or build their business enables them to stop sabotaging their efforts.

It’s unbelievably weird how it happens, you’ll have to trust me that it does.

At least for the next 4-6 weeks while you implement the steps above.

Why 4-6 weeks?

This is how long it takes to break a bad habit and build a new one.

What’s truly phenomenal is that you don’t have to wait 4-6 weeks to see any business awesomeness.

That happens within days.
