After getting off the phone with a journalist this morning who's writing an article for RBS (Royal Bank Of Scotland) about ways leaders can safeguard their employee's mental health.

I decided it was probably time to tackle the biggest question of all...

Who is responsible for mental health?

Is it up to the mental health professionals to support people more?

Is it the responsibility of governments to plough more money into ensuring resources are available for those struggling?

Is it the responsibility of schools to equip children with the skills they need to reduce stress, anxiety and depression?

The thing is that it's not the responsibility of any organisation.

It's yours.

The same as your physical health.

It's yours.

You see, if you choose to consume high sugar, highly toxic and highly poisonous foods then you are causing your body to struggle.

If you choose to sit down all day and not do any exercise it's you who is causing your body to struggle.

If you choose to limit the numbers of hours you are dedicating to sleep, because you're tied up in a Netflix box set then it's you who is causing your body to struggle.

The thing is...

All these things also affect your minds ability to function too.

Rubbish food limits your bodies ability to produce the hormones it needs to feel good.

Inactivity limits your bodies ability to produce the hormones it needs to feel good.

A lack of quality sleep limits your bodies ability to produce the hormones it needs to feel good.

These three things are the foundation of a happy healthy life and the responsibility for all three, lie firmly on your shoulders.

The government produce guidelines on all three.

Schools talk to children about adopting healthy lifestyles.

Mental health professionals and other medical professionals pass on key pieces advice about maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

But none of these organisations has control of your actions.

Only you do.

The most upsetting thing is that these three things are easy to control.

You don't even need to spend much money to implement any of these three things.

YouTube has videos for healthy foods, exercise routines and even a wealth of sleep meditations.

The internet has blog after blog of healthy recipes, workout guides and ways to improve your sleep routine.

In fact, sometimes it can seem like there's too much information available!

It's your choice.

It's your journey.

It's your mental health.

Unfortunately, trying to alter any of these things once you've already fallen down the rabbit hole is really, really fricking hard.

chocolate.

Your brain convinces you that if you choose to walk overtaking the car you'll encounter something scary.

Your brain messes with your mojo just as you lie down to go to sleep.

This is because you're already trapped in the stress response.

When you're here, your brain and body are not thinking about long-term consequences.

It's just thinking holy fricking hell, I need to take action right now to survive.

It craves sugary junk foods for instant energy.

It forces you to remain sedentary so that you don't waste your energy as you may just need all the energy you have to escape the scary thing that is inevitably about to happen.

It blocks your ability to go to sleep because as soon as you close your eyes, you're leaving yourself vulnerable to attack.

Your biology is feeding off your emotional state and doing what it has spent thousands and thousands of years perfecting.

It's keeping you trapped in fear.

This is the real reason it's your responsibility.

Only when you choose to step outside of fear and to make changes to the way you're feelings, your actions and your thoughts can you ever benefit from the help which is offered to you.

It doesn't matter how amazing the mental health professional is.

It doesn't matter how phenomenal their methodology, technique or system is.

It doesn't matter how successful past clients have been.

The only thing that matters is that you choose to embrace it.

That you decide to go 'all in'.

That you decide to be open to a life which is happy, healthy and hopeful.

Without this decision, nothing you try will work.

You will block any chance of success without even realising.

Because you are trapped in the feeling of fear you'll be triggering thoughts designed to keep you there.

You may tell yourself things like; It's not going to work so why even bother...

You may find yourself thinking things like; I've tried before and it never worked, so this isn't going to work either...

You may even hear yourself tell you something like; your broken and you can't be fixed so what's the point in trying...

These thoughts will then go onto affect your actions...

Wanna know what actions you'll take?

Yup, you guessed it...

The chocolate bar over the apple...

The sofa over the walk...

The non-stop screen time over a book before bed...

So here's my question to you: 'What are you going to choose to do now?'

You can choose to continue as you have; sinking further and further down the rabbit hole...

Or you can choose to make just one decision today that will have a positive effect on your physical and mental health further down the line.

You don't have to change everything.

Just one small thing.

Then tomorrow, make another decision that will benefit your future

Then another and another and another.

Recovering from mental illness doesn't happen in an instant.

It happens over time.

You just need to start.

No one can fix you but you.

Diet, exercise and sleep are the foundations of a mentally healthy life but they're not the only things.

If you've faced years of adversity all they will do is help you feel good in the present moment.

They won't help you let go of all the horrible, hurtful and harmful things you've experienced in your past.

They'll also not help you move towards a life which helps you feel valued, worthy and fulfilled.

Unless you also have something which is going to help you do these two things chances are you'll end up seeing a few months of happiness followed by a slow and steady decline.

You may have experienced this multiple times in your life already?

But, don't worry.

It really doesn't have to be this way.

You too can experience true emotional and mental freedom not just today, but every day.
