Such a great question!
Most entrepreneurial journey start out in the exact same way; with a bucket load of enthusiasm, a handful of cash and an amazing idea which they know is going to change the world.
The problem is that very quickly you run out of cash and enthusiasm trying to get your ideas in front of the very people who actually need your product or service.
It's often after years of hard work, many failures and many, many late nights that things actually start to come together.
Over the past few days I've had the pleasure of speaking to many different entrepreneurs about their journeys and I've found the one thing that separates the successes from the failures is gumption.
Isn't that a fabulous word?
It's one of those that I just love saying!
But it's true.
The successes have the gumption to keep going, no matter what.
But, they also have the gumption to get out there and be themselves from day one.
It really isn't about the product or service it's about who you are and then connecting with the people who like you.
For me, this was one of the hardest lessons I had to learn.
I knew many people needed help - the media is awash with stories about people struggling with their mental health, and yet, for the first couple of years it felt like no matter how much I put myself out there people weren't interested.
& I put myself out there a lot.
I spent thousands on networking groups, PR, tracking software, adverts... all the things that are supposed to get you a steady stream of clients but actually won't unless you have your branding sorted.
& when I'm talking about branding I mean more than just the colours, fonts and logo, I mean you splattered across your website, social media and content (& not necessarily your image, but your soul).
Your customers need to be able to see something you've put out and instantly connect with you on a subconscious level.
Then they'll dig a little deeper, maybe click the link and read a blog post, maybe opt into your lead magnet and maybe, just maybe 6 months down the line they hit the buy button.
So how do you get clear on who you are?
Well, if you haven't done a little soul searching on your entrepreneurial journey, now is the time.
You need to do it before you schedule another post, book a course or buy another book...
Sit down with a blank piece of paper (sticky notes and coloured pencils are not a necessity but if you're like me they definitely make it more fun) and ask yourself these two simple questions -
1) Am I showing up as the most authentic version of myself?
2) How can I show people the real me?
When I asked myself these two questions after a round of yoga I heard these two answers:
1) No & you know you aren't*
2) Do your yoga & journaling live
*my inside voice has no tact - ever
So in all honesty, I new the answer to number 1 before I even asked - I just didn't want to admit it.
The idea of me falling over and talking about my rubbish days in real life absolutely terrified me.
What would my clients think?
Oh, there goes ny basket case of a therapist...
But you know what.
I did it.
I showed up live at 7am with my yoga mat and my journal and I fell into the wardrobe in the spare room while trying to do a pose (it happens a lot) then I sat down on the floor and started talking about my morning.
I started saying that the first thing I thought about that day bummed me out, how my knee was hurting and how that affects my ability to concentrate and talking about how grateful I am for my iron...
& you know what?
I my clients are unbelievably grateful that I am willing to do this.
The days life is hard, they know, that it they're not alone and that life is about the ups and the downs.
They get a giggle when I fall over and know that if they're at home trying to do some exercise it doesn't mean they have to be perfect, they just have to try.
& you know what else?
It keeps me accountable too!
It's also started to gain some traction with other people, people I have never met, people who are my 'ideal customers'.
I'm not saying you have to bare all like I do - you and I are different people, thats the point of this.
The other things you need to do is get really clear on who you want to work with so that you can make sure every single piece of marketing you do draws that one specific type of person in & repels anyone else.
You've probably done the whole 'perfect customer avatar' thing. I had.
In fact, I had done it on multiple occasions.
But it wasn't until I read Russell Brunson's Expert Secrets book did I actually do it properly.
I literally have a picture of my ideal customer on my whiteboard, I know where they shop, I know where they eat out, what car they drive, what hobbies they have...
I went full-on stalker mode.
When you know your ideal customer inside and out you can show up where they're likely to be.
When you show up consistently in their 'space' as yourself then things start to happen organically.
The other thing about his book is it helps you really embrace the whole of you and gives you the exact steps you need to take to show up in the world as the expert in your industry - even if right now you feel like a fraud.
In fact, I love his book so much it sits right next to me in the office!
He gives his 'secrets' away because he doesn't make money from teaching, training or consulting.
He makes his money by selling a software package.
& over the years, I have learned more from him for free than I have enrolling in very expensive training courses.
