I know, this totally goes against everything you've been told in the self-development world - but here's why...
Every time you say an affirmation you trigger your brains bullshit button
It's 100% true.
If you're here then I have no doubt in my heart that you've heard of (& love Louise Hay, may she rest in peace).
Don't get me wrong, I do too.
But, here's the thing.
Louise Hay & many others in the self-development world end up leading many female entrepreneurs deeper down the all consuming mentally wobbly rabbit hole.
You see, when we say something positive, which is nowhere near our current reality you set off a negative emotional reaction in your body.
Wanna see how insanely quick your physiology is?
I challenge you to think of something you really, really dislike about yourself.
Next, work out what the opposite is & turn it into an affirmation statement.
Now, take 2-3 deep breaths, clear your mind and just tune into how your body is feeling right now.
Do you have any aches and pains, maybe some little niggles in your shoulders or even a slight twitch in your eye from working way too hard.
Don't do anything about these, just know what's going on in your body.
Now, say your affirmation loud and proud.
(e.g., you're drowning in debt and making next to nothing in your biz, your affirmation might be something like 'I am a money magnet' or 'I am financially wealthy')
Close your eyes again and check in with your body - what's changed?
Have you noticed a tightness in your chest?
Maybe you're feeling slightly sick?
Or maybe, you're completely emotionally overwhelmed and you're holding back floods of tears.
This is why affirmations are dangerous.
But, it's more than the instant psychological reaction.
Remember that bullshit button?
In the medical community these are called NATs (Negative Automatic Thoughts) & these are nasty little buggers.
These are the things which are flying around your head, usually without your knowledge, which are in control about how you really feel about yourself.
Because these NATs are whizzing around your subconscious, they do more than keep the negative physiological reaction going, but also dictate how you behave.
So, back to the 'I am a money magnet' or 'I am wealthy' affirmation.
Every time you say this to motivate yourself to take that mighty leap and start earning some cash, you're actually making yourself feel worse and will end up doing the exact opposite of any money making activities.
If you want to loose a few lbs, and affirm that you are 'slim and sexy' you'll probably end up & gobbling a giant bar of chocolate.
OK, so I'm only giving you 1/2 the truth...
I love affirmations & use them with my clients and as part of my own daily routine.
But here's how you need to do it so that you aren't triggering all those NATs:
STEP 1: What do you want to change?
Write out what you don't want to have or experience any more.
Get really, really specific.
STEP 2: Imagine if...
Write out what the opposite is.
& I'm talking about your ultimate, wave the magic wand goal.
STEP 3: Reel the magic in
What would be just 1 step closer to the magic goal?
Say for example you've had 0 clients and are affirming 100, your 1 step closer is just 1 client.
STEP 4: Tune into your body.
Remember where in your body and how it showed up before when we did the little test & check to see there's a little resistance.
Not too much, just a little.
This means that it's definitely something you need to work on but you're unlikely to be derailed every time you say it.
STEP 5: Prove it
Plan in small, simple things you can do to actually turn this affirmation into your reality.
You might make a call, go for a jog, or even forgo the scummy chocolate covered digestive biscuit with your evening cup of tea...
Whatever it is, the more you say it but don't take action the more you'll be negatively triggering your brain and body.
